And I feel that we have tried ignorance for a very long time and it’s time we try education," (LA Times Dec 10, 1994) Dr. Elders was speaking during an AIDS forum discussing prevention. She went further to say "[b]ut we’ve not even taught... the very basics. And I feel that we have tried ignorance for a very long time and it’s time we try education.” As a result she was fired.
Although she was fired, Dr. Elders brought forth revolution in regards to self pleasure. In a fiery reponse to Dr. Elders' firing, a group of activists at the Good Vibrations sex retailer gathered and decided that May would be the perfect month to celebrate and educate about masturbation. Since 1995, we've gathered virtually and physically to further destigmatize masturbation.
Growing up in the early 2000's masturbation was frowned upon and seen as unnatural and sinful.
